Under the Silver Tree holds writing competitions to further our mission of encouraging reading, writing and the love of literature. We acknowledge the continuous support of John Wren at the Silver City Cinema and of West Darling Arts.

For the purposes of our competitions *Western Region is defined as a resident of Far West NSW, the areas encompassed by Broken Hill

City Council, Wentworth Shire Council, Central Darling Shire and the Western Unincorporated Area.

Vintage Cookbook

NON-FICTION WRITING COMPETITION 

Opening date: 16th August 2021

Closing date: 1st February 2022

Entrants in this competition will write a biography of a family member or friend who has spent a significant part of their life in the Western Region.

There are two sections:

  • one for individual authors

  • and another for collaboration

FIRST PRIZE - $500 (each section)

HIGHLY COMMENDED - $100 ( up to 5 for each section)
WEST DARLING ARTS PRIZE for writer aged 18 or under - $100

Do you have a great story to tell but need a collaborator to work with you to write the story? If so, you are welcome to contact Under the Silver Tree Bookshop who can assist you to find a collaborator.

SILVER TREE POETRY COMPETITION

Closing date:     1st February 2022
Under the Silver Tree Cooperative Bookshop is conducting a poetry writing competition, with total prize money of $1,500 
JUDGE: Les Wicks, Australian poet, publisher and workshop facilitator 
FIRST PRIZE : $1,000 
BEST LOCAL* POEM: $300 
HIGHLY COMMENDED (up to 2 at judge’s discretion) : $100 each 
Word limit: 50 lines 
This competition is open to all ages 
THERE IS NO SET THEME OR STYLE

SILVER TREE SHORT STORY COMPETITION


OPENING DATE: 1st November 2021

CLOSING DATE: 30th April 2022

Under the Silver Tree Cooperative Bookshop is conducting a short story writing competition, with total prize money of $1,500.

Entrants will write a short story of no more than 2000 words inspired by RebeccaWest’s quote:

“The world is round and what might seem like the end may also be only the beginning.”


This competition is open to all ages.

There is a fee of $10 for each entry.

FIRST PRIZE : $1,000
HIGHLY COMMENDED (up to 2 at judge’s discretion) : $100 each


ADDITIONAL PRIZES OFFERED BY OUR PARTNERS AND SPONSORS :

West Darling Arts Award to a writer from Western Region* : $500

Totally Addicted to Hair Award to a writer under 26 : $100

Entrants may submit more than one entry.

The winners will be announced in May 2022 at a prize giving ceremony at the

Broken Hill Art Exchange
